How to Add a Phone Number to Your Shopify Store, Step by Step
To add a phone number to your Shopify store, first get a dedicated business number, since Shopify doesn't provide one. Then enter it in Settings > General > Store contact details and add it to your theme's announcement bar, footer, and contact page as a tap-to-call link. The whole job takes about 20 minutes. Most of that is choosing the number and deciding who answers it.
Phone is still the support channel Americans say they prefer. In a March 2025 YouGov survey, 35% picked it first, ahead of email at 23% and live chat at 10%, and nearly 70% had used phone support. A visible number gives those shoppers a way to ask the one question that stands between them and checkout.
Does Shopify give you a phone number?
No. Shopify gives you a store, a checkout, and a chat inbox (Shopify Inbox), but not a phone line. You get the number elsewhere and then tell Shopify about it.
Shopify does expect you to have one. Its Terms of Service say your public-facing contact information should include your name, address, telephone number, and email address. Its consumer-protection guidance asks for a phone number customers can use for questions, complaints, or claims, displayed somewhere public and easy to find. Shopify's help center also suggests using a dedicated business number or call-forwarding service, so you don't have to publish your personal number.
Step 1: Get a business phone number
There are four common ways to get a number for a Shopify store:
| Option | Typical cost | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your personal cell | Free | Testing demand in week one | Your personal number ends up on every policy page, and you can't easily hand calls to anyone else |
| Google Voice | From $10 per user a month, on top of Google Workspace | Stores already on Google Workspace | No link to your Shopify customers or orders |
| Business phone service (Quo, RingCentral, Dialpad) | From about $19 per user a month | Teams that want a general-purpose phone system | Not built around Shopify, so callers aren't matched to customers or orders |
| A Shopify phone app (such as Shopdigits) | From $29 a month, number included | Stores that want calls tied to Shopify customers and orders | Features and pricing models vary widely between apps |
If you're comparing apps, our honest comparison of Shopify phone number apps covers eight of them, including where ours falls short. You'll also need to choose between a toll-free and a local number; see toll-free vs local numbers for a Shopify store.
Step 2: Add the number to your store contact details
This is the number Shopify itself knows about. Shopify shows it on your store and policy pages, and themes and notification templates can read it.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > General.
- In the Store contact details section, click your store name.
- Enter your business phone number.
- Click Save.
This is separate from your billing details, so changing it won't affect how Shopify bills you.
Step 3: Check your contact information policy
Under Settings > Policies, Shopify can generate a contact information policy from your store contact details. Store policies are linked in your checkout footer, so this puts your number one click away from a shopper who's about to pay. Open the policy after Step 2 and confirm the new number appears.
Step 4: Put the number where shoppers look
Shoppers look for a phone number in three places: the top of the page, the footer, and the contact page. Open your theme editor from Online Store by clicking Edit theme. Section names below are from Shopify's free themes, and most paid themes use similar ones.
The announcement bar
- In the theme editor, select the Announcement bar section.
- Click Add Announcement, or open the existing one.
- In Text, write the number the way people read it, for example “Questions? Call (833) 555-0142”.
- In Link, enter
tel:+18335550142. - Click Save.
Fill in both fields. A common mistake is putting the number only in the Link field, which leaves the bar with nothing to show.
The footer
In the Footer section, add a Text block (in most themes), type your number, highlight it, click the link icon, and enter the same tel: link. Your hours and support email belong here too.
The header
Most themes, including Shopify's free ones, don't have a phone field in the header. If you want the number up there, add a menu item under Content > Menus that links to your tel: address, or ask your theme developer. Shopify recommends custom sections over editing theme code, so your theme can still receive updates.
A contact page
- Go to Online Store > Pages and click Add page.
- Title it “Contact us”.
- In Content, add your phone number, hours, and what callers can get help with. This text appears above the form.
- Set Theme template to contact to add Shopify's contact form.
- Click Save, then add the page to your main or footer menu.
Step 5: Make the number tap-to-call
Most shoppers browse on their phones, and a number they can tap is much easier to use than one they have to memorize. A tap-to-call link is a normal link whose address starts with tel::
- Start with
tel:+1for a US or Canadian number. - Add the 10 digits with no spaces, dashes, or brackets.
- Keep the readable version, like (833) 555-0142, as the visible text.
Test it from your own phone after saving. On a desktop, the link opens whatever calling app the computer has, if any. That's why the visible text should always show the full number.
Step 6 (optional): Add it to order emails
Order and shipping emails are where customers go when something goes wrong. In Settings > Notifications, you can edit a customer notification's code and add the {{ shop.phone }} variable. It prints the number from your store contact details, so it stays correct if you change the number later.
Step 7 (if you have a location): Add it to Google
If customers can visit you, through a showroom, a pickup point, or a service area, add the number to your Google Business Profile. Google asks for a local number there rather than a central call-center line. Online-only stores generally aren't eligible for a Business Profile, so skip this step if you don't meet customers in person.
Before you publish it: decide who answers
Publishing a number is a promise that someone will pick up. A caller who gets voicemail every time usually doesn't leave a message, and may decide your store isn't a real business. Decide before you publish:
- Who rings. One person, or the whole team at once? Apps with a mobile app usually ring everyone signed in.
- What happens when nobody picks up. A voicemail greeting that tells callers when you'll call back, a text back, or an AI receptionist that can answer the question.
- What callers can get help with. Order status, product questions, returns. List them on the contact page so people call for the right things.
How this works with Shopdigits
Shopdigits gives your store a dedicated toll-free number, reserved inside the app, with vanity search if you want letters in it. Calls ring your team on the Shopdigits iOS and Android apps first. On Medium Shop and Enterprise, the AI voice agent picks up when nobody answers. It can look up the caller's order in Shopify, answer from your products and policies, and transfer to a person. On Small Shop, missed calls go to voicemail, which is transcribed.
Two theme add-ons help with Step 4:
- SMS sign-up, a footer block that shows “Text or call us at” your number, with the consent notice carriers look for when they verify a toll-free number for texting.
- Call Widget, an app embed that adds a “Call us” button so shoppers can call your line straight from the browser.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify give you a phone number?
No. Shopify doesn't provide phone numbers to merchants, and Shopify Inbox is chat only. You get a number from a phone app or provider, then add it to your store. Shopify recommends a dedicated business number or call-forwarding service so you don't have to publish a personal number.
Where do I change my store's phone number in Shopify?
In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > General, click your store name in the Store contact details section, update the phone number, and click Save. Customers can see it on your store and policy pages.
Do I have to show a phone number on my Shopify store?
Shopify's Terms of Service say your public-facing contact information should include a telephone number, and its consumer-protection guidance asks for a phone number customers can use for questions, complaints, or claims, displayed somewhere easy to find.
How do I make my phone number clickable on Shopify?
Link the number with a tel: link. Wherever the theme editor lets you add a link, such as the announcement bar's Link field or a text block's link button, enter tel: followed by a plus sign, the country code, and the digits with no spaces, for example tel:+18335550142.
Can I use my personal cell number for my Shopify store?
You can, but it puts your personal number on every policy page and makes it hard to hand calls to a teammate or switch phones later. A dedicated business number keeps store calls separate and can ring several people at once.
Should my Shopify store use a toll-free or local number?
For an online-only store selling across the US and Canada, a toll-free number is usually the simpler choice. A local number is better if you have a physical location, sell mostly in one area, or expect calls from outside North America.
