AI Receptionist for Shopify: How It Works and What It Saves

9 min readBy the Shopdigits team

An AI receptionist for Shopify is a voice agent that answers your store's phone when your team can't, using your Shopify data to give callers real answers. In Shopdigits, it recognizes returning customers, checks where their order is, and knows what your policies say. It covers every hour of the week for a flat $49 a month, a fraction of what a receptionist or answering service costs.

This guide walks through what happens on a call, step by step, what store context the agent works from, and where the savings come from. For an overview of the product itself, see an AI voice agent behind a real phone number.

What happens when a customer calls your store?

Here is the path a call takes when a customer dials your Shopdigits number:

  1. Your team's phones ring first. The call rings everyone signed in to the Shopdigits app on iOS and Android. If someone answers, it's a normal phone call.
  2. The AI picks up after the rings you choose. You set how long it waits, from one to ten rings. The default is three rings, about 15 seconds. If nobody has answered by then, the AI voice agent takes the call.
  3. It works out who's calling. The agent matches the caller's number to a customer in your Shopify store and loads their name and most recent orders, so a returning customer doesn't have to spell out an email address.
  4. It answers from your store's data. Order status comes live from Shopify. Policy answers come from your store policies and the notes you write. Product questions are answered from your synced catalog.
  5. It hands off or wraps up. If the caller needs a person, the agent transfers them to the number you set, or offers voicemail if you haven't set one. When the caller is done, it says goodbye and ends the call.
  6. You get the full record. The call is recorded and transcribed, it shows up in your Shopdigits inbox, and the store owner gets an email with the transcript.

The conversation itself is meant to feel like talking to a person. Callers can cut in mid-sentence and the agent stops to listen, instead of making them sit through a menu.

What shop context does the AI voice agent use?

A generic answering service can take a message. It can't tell a caller that their package is on a UPS truck and arriving Thursday. That difference comes down to context, and Shopdigits draws it from four places.

Who is calling

When a call comes in, the agent looks up the caller's phone number among your Shopify customers. If it finds a match, it starts the call already knowing the customer's name and their recent orders and checkouts. That's why it can answer “where's my order?” without asking for an order number first.

Where their order is

For order questions, the agent checks Shopify while the caller is on the line, so it reports the status as it is right now, not as it was last night. It can tell a caller:

  • Whether the order has shipped, and with which carrier.
  • The tracking number and link, read out only if the caller asks for it.
  • The estimated delivery date.
  • Whether the order was cancelled.

Callers can also give an order number, like “order 1042”. If they're calling from a number that isn't on that order, the agent asks for the email, last name, or ZIP or postal code on it before sharing anything. Shopdigits' servers enforce that check, not just the AI's instructions, so a wrong answer gets no order details.

What your policies say

Shipping times, return windows, and exchange rules make up a large share of support calls. In Shopdigits, the Store knowledge section of the Voice Agent page has a Store policies & FAQ field, where you write answers in your own words, and a Sync Shopify policies button that pulls in the policies already published on your store.

The agent is instructed to answer policy questions only from that material. If the answer isn't there, it says so instead of guessing, which matters far more on a returns question than sounding confident does. Keep the notes focused, with your most-asked questions first.

What you sell

Your product catalog syncs to Shopdigits when you install it and stays current through Shopify's product updates. During a call, the agent can pull that synced catalog to answer questions about products, variants, prices, and stock. It's instructed never to invent a price, a variant, or availability that isn't in your catalog.

What it won't do

The agent has read-only access to orders. It can't issue refunds, cancel or edit orders, change a shipping address, or process a return, and it won't imply that it has. When a caller needs one of those, it offers to transfer them to your team or take a voicemail.

Customer

Hi, I'm checking on order 1187.

Shopdigits AI

I can help with that. Can you tell me the email, last name, or ZIP code on the order?

Customer

The ZIP is 98107.

Shopdigits AI

Thanks. Order 1187 shipped with UPS and is expected to arrive Thursday. Would you like the tracking number?

Customer

No thanks. If the jacket doesn't fit, can I return it?

Shopdigits AI

Yes. Unworn items can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a full refund.

Customer

Great. Could you cancel my other order, though?

Shopdigits AI

I'm not able to cancel orders, but I can connect you with the team who can. One moment.

How much does an AI receptionist cost compared with the alternatives?

There are three common ways to make sure a store's phone gets answered: hire someone, pay an answering service, or use an AI receptionist. Here's what each costs for a store that gets 60 calls a month, averaging three minutes each.

Published prices checked October 5, 2026, before taxes and add-ons. Assumes 60 calls a month at three minutes each (180 minutes). See sources below.
OptionHow it's pricedMonthly cost at 60 calls
Full-time receptionist$18.27/hour median wage, plus benefits (about 30% of employer cost)≈ $4,525, for one 40-hour shift a week
Live answering service, per minute (Ruby)$250 for 50 minutes, up to $1,725 for 500$720 (200-minute plan)
Live answering service, per call (Smith.ai)$300 for 30 calls, then $11.50 a call$645
Shopdigits AI receptionistFlat monthly plan, AI included on Medium Shop$49, at any hour, with no per-minute meter

Over a year, that's $588 for Shopdigits against roughly $7,700 to $8,600 for an answering service at this volume, and about $54,300 for a full-time receptionist. The gap widens as call volume grows, because Shopdigits doesn't charge by the minute or the call.

The comparison isn't perfectly like for like. A good receptionist does much more than answer the phone, and live answering services put a trained person on every call. But if the job is making sure every caller gets an answer about their order, your policies, or your products, an AI receptionist does that job for far less.

Where does an AI receptionist save a Shopify store money?

You stop paying for idle hours

A full-time employee works about 40 of the 168 hours in a week, under a quarter of them, and is paid whether the phone rings or not. Covering evenings and weekends with people would take more than four full-time hires. The AI agent is there for every hour, and your plan costs the same whether it takes ten calls or a hundred.

You avoid a per-minute meter

Answering services sell bundles of minutes or calls, so a holiday rush or a shipping delay makes the bill climb at the moment your margins are under the most pressure. A flat plan makes your phone costs predictable through peak season.

You lose fewer sales to voicemail

A caller asking whether something is in stock or will arrive by Friday is usually close to buying. If they reach voicemail, many won't leave a message, and some will buy elsewhere. A simple way to size this for your store:

Monthly sales lost to missed calls = missed calls × share of callers who would have bought × average order value.

For example, 20 missed calls a month, with one in four callers ready to buy and an $80 average order, comes to $400 a month. Those are illustrative numbers, so plug in your own. Winning back even a small part of that covers a $49 plan.

Your team gets time back

“Where is my order?” calls are repetitive and easy to answer from Shopify, but each one still pulls someone away from packing or sourcing. When the agent handles them, the morning starts with a handful of transcripts to skim, not a pile of voicemails to return.

When is a person still the better answer?

Some calls should reach a human: an upset customer, a damaged delivery, a wholesale inquiry, or anything that needs a refund or an order change. Shopdigits is built around that. Your team's phones ring first. When the agent can't help, it transfers the caller to the number you set, and if nobody picks up there, the caller can leave a voicemail, which is transcribed for you.

How do you set up an AI receptionist on Shopify?

  1. Install Shopdigits from the Shopify App Store and choose a local or toll-free number.
  2. Add yourself and your team as employees, then sign in to the Shopdigits app on iOS or Android so calls ring you first.
  3. Open Voice Agent & SMS, make sure Answer missed calls with AI is on, and choose how many rings to wait under Answer after.
  4. Add a number under Transfer calls to a person at, so callers who need a human can reach one.
  5. In Store knowledge, write your policies and common questions, then click Sync Shopify policies.
  6. Call your number from another phone, let it ring through, and ask the agent about a real order.

The AI voice agent is included on Medium Shop ($49/month) and Enterprise ($99/month, unlimited employees), and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial. Install Shopdigits on Shopify or compare plans.

Frequently asked questions

How does an AI receptionist work for a Shopify store?

An AI receptionist answers your store's phone calls in a natural voice when your team doesn't pick up. Shopdigits rings your team's mobile apps first, then the AI voice agent answers. It matches the caller to their Shopify customer record, checks order status in Shopify, and answers questions from your store policies and product catalog.

How much does an AI receptionist cost for a Shopify store?

Shopdigits includes its AI receptionist in the Medium Shop plan at $49 a month, billed through Shopify, with the business number, mobile apps, and unlimited calls within the US and Canada. It's a flat monthly price rather than a per-minute or per-call charge, and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than an answering service?

Usually, yes. As of October 2026, Ruby's live receptionist plans start at $250 a month for 50 minutes and Smith.ai's start at $300 a month for 30 calls. At 60 calls a month, that works out to roughly $645 to $720 a month, compared with $49 for Shopdigits Medium Shop.

Can an AI receptionist look up a customer's Shopify order?

Yes. The Shopdigits agent looks up the order and reports its current status from Shopify, including carrier, tracking, and estimated delivery. If the caller's number isn't on the order, it first asks for the order's email, last name, or ZIP code, and it shares nothing if those don't match.

What can't the Shopdigits AI receptionist do?

It can't issue refunds, cancel or edit orders, change shipping addresses, or process returns, and it won't suggest it has. When a caller needs one of those, it offers to transfer them to the number you set, or to take a voicemail.

Does the AI receptionist replace my team on the phone?

No. Calls ring your team on the Shopdigits iOS and Android apps first. The AI voice agent only answers when nobody picks up within the number of rings you choose, so it covers nights, weekends, and busy moments.

How will I know what the AI said to a customer?

Every AI-answered call is recorded and transcribed. The transcript and recording appear in your Shopdigits inbox, and the store owner gets an email with the transcript when the call ends.
