Toll-Free vs Local Number: Which Is Better for a Shopify Store?
For most online-only Shopify stores selling across the US and Canada, a toll-free number is the simpler choice. A local number is better if you have a physical location, sell mostly in one region, or need callers outside North America to reach you. The biggest practical difference isn't how the number looks. It's what each type needs before it can send a text.
A disclosure: Shopdigits offers US toll-free numbers only, so we have a stake in this question. We've tried to give local numbers a fair hearing, including the cases where they're the better pick.
Toll-free vs local, side by side
| Toll-free (800, 833, 844…) | Local (your area code) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays for the call | Your business. Free for callers in the US and Canada. | The caller, at their usual rates |
| What it suggests | A business that serves customers nationwide | A business based in a particular place |
| Calls from outside the US and Canada | Often don't connect, or are billed as international | Work like any international call |
| Registration to send texts | One-time toll-free verification | A2P 10DLC brand and campaign registration |
| Texting fees to register | No 10DLC brand or campaign fees | $4.50 brand, $15 campaign review, $1.50–$10 a month |
| Typical texting approval | A few business days | Brand in minutes; campaign 10–15 days at Twilio right now |
| Vanity numbers | Wide choice across seven prefixes | Limited to numbers left in your area code |
| Google Business Profile | Google asks for a local number where possible | What Google asks for |
Which one do shoppers trust more?
You'll find confident statistics on both sides: that most consumers trust toll-free numbers more, or that people are far more likely to answer a local area code. We couldn't trace the toll-free figures to an original study, and the best-known local-answer-rate survey dates from 2014 and is about calls businesses make, not calls shoppers make. Our honest view:
- When customers call you, they've already decided to dial. What builds trust is what happens next: someone answers, or they get a real answer about their order.
- When you call customers, for example to follow up on an abandoned cart, any unfamiliar number risks going unanswered. Leaving a voicemail and texting from the same number helps more than the area code does.
Texting: the difference most stores miss
If you plan to text customers, with order updates, replies to questions, or a text back after a missed call, the two types follow different rules.
Toll-free numbers: toll-free verification
Carriers block texts from toll-free numbers that haven't been verified, including numbers whose verification is still pending. You submit your business details, what you'll text about, sample messages, and how customers opt in. Since February 17, 2026, most businesses also need an EIN or other business registration number; sole proprietors are exempt. Reviews usually take a few business days.
Local numbers: A2P 10DLC registration
In the US, a local number used for business texting must be registered through The Campaign Registry. You register your brand, then a “campaign” describing what you'll send. Carriers pass through these fees:
- $4.50 to register a brand.
- $15 for each campaign review, charged again if you resubmit.
- A monthly campaign fee: $1.50 for low-volume mixed use, $2 for sole proprietors, and $10 for most standard use cases, with the first three months billed upfront.
- Per-message carrier fees, such as $0.003 per text sent to AT&T or T-Mobile customers.
Brands are usually approved in minutes. Campaigns take longer. Twilio normally quotes several days, but its documentation currently warns that campaign reviews are taking 10 to 15 days because of volume.
Texting customers in Canada
10DLC is a US system. Canadian carriers filter business texts strictly, and Twilio recommends sending them from verified toll-free numbers or short codes. If many of your customers are in Canada, that tips the balance toward toll-free.
International callers
North American toll-free numbers are built for callers in the US and Canada. From other countries, calls often don't connect, or the caller pays international rates anyway. If you ship worldwide and get calls from abroad, a toll-free number shouldn't be your only contact option. Pair it with email or chat, or use a local number, which anyone can dial internationally.
Cost
The number itself usually costs about the same either way, and many phone apps include one in the plan. The difference is in minutes: toll-free calls cost the receiving business, and some phone systems pass that on. Aircall's Shopify listing, for example, excludes toll-free calls from its unlimited inbound calling. Before you choose, check whether your plan's calling allowance covers inbound toll-free minutes.
When a local number is the better choice
- You have a physical location. A showroom, studio, pickup point, or service area. Google Business Profile asks for a local number, and customers nearby will recognize the area code.
- Most of your customers are in one region. A local area code can be part of a hometown brand.
- You get calls from outside North America. A local number is reachable from abroad.
- You already have a local number customers know. Keeping it can be worth more than any advantage of switching.
Shopdigits doesn't offer local numbers, so if one of these fits, choose a provider that does. Our comparison of Shopify phone number apps notes which ones offer local numbers or let you forward an existing line.
When a toll-free number is the better choice
- You sell online across the US and Canada and don't want an area code to suggest you're a local shop.
- You want a memorable vanity number for packaging, ads, or receipts.
- You want to text customers soon, with a single verification form and no campaign fees or 10DLC queue.
- You text customers in Canada.

Frequently asked questions
Is a toll-free or local number better for an online store?
For most online-only stores selling across the US and Canada, toll-free is the simpler choice: it isn't tied to one area, it's free for callers, and texting needs one verification form rather than 10DLC registration. A local number is better if you have a physical location, sell mostly in one region, or expect calls from outside North America.
Do customers trust toll-free numbers more than local numbers?
There's no reliable recent research that settles it, and the percentages often quoted online don't trace back to an original study. For calls customers make to you, what builds trust is a real person or a helpful answer when they call. For calls you make to customers, any unfamiliar number risks going unanswered.
What does a local number need before it can send texts?
In the US, a local (10-digit) number used for business texting must be registered for A2P 10DLC: a brand registration ($4.50), a campaign review ($15 per review), and a monthly campaign fee from $1.50 to $10 depending on the use case, plus per-message carrier fees. Twilio currently says campaign reviews take 10 to 15 days.
What does a toll-free number need before it can send texts?
A one-time toll-free verification. You submit your business details, what you'll text about, sample messages, and how customers opt in. Since February 17, 2026, most businesses also need an EIN or other business registration number. Reviews usually take a few business days.
Can people outside the US and Canada call a toll-free number?
Often not. From other countries, calls to North American toll-free numbers frequently don't connect or are billed as international calls. A local number can be dialed from anywhere as a normal international call.
Does Shopdigits offer local numbers?
No. Shopdigits offers US toll-free numbers, with vanity search, on every plan. If you need a local number, choose a provider that offers one.
